How to improve your Xbox Live experience
If you’re like me and you can’t understand why the headsets aren’t used for anything purposeful other than hurling abuse, shouting of “I ****** your mum” statements, trash talk and general crap then you might want to read on to solve your problem.
There are all kinds of people on Xbox Live. You get those people mentioned above, who don’t use the mic for anything constructive and you also get some other smaller minorities I’ve run into over the course of 12 months or so, as outlined below.
The “Breather”
Sometimes you get people who don’t know how to locate the mic boom. Sometimes it seems as though it’s a good few inches up their nose, and your gaming session is constantly disrupted by breathing or muffled chatter that is beyond understanding.
The “Weird Kid”
I think I’ve had two very strange experiences on Call Of Duty 4 when there’s been a young child playing who seem to be literally away with the fairies. They talk to themselves, sing to themselves, hum and even curse themselves. Yet when you try and talk to them and tell them to stop, they don’t even recognise you. These guys seem to be possessed by some kind of satanic power - they really are that…strange.
The “Foreigner”
Yes, we’ve all had it. You’re playing a game and you’re sat in a lobby of say 16 players. Then you get a pair of guys in the same clan who are completely foreign. They are usually French, Dutch or German. Most of the time, their name highlights this, as they might be called something like “Lethal Killer NL” (Netherlands) or whatever…you see the point. These guys manage to drown out every last English speaking person in the room by talking rapidly and loudly in their mother tongue, thus infuriating the English and American players who then start trying to “replicate” their language, whilst the weird kid continues cursing himself in the background and the breather is distributing inaudible levels of feedback to everyone.
The Solution
I got so fed up of people just acting like complete idiots that I decided to take the plunge and mute everyone but those on my contact list. It has made my gaming experience infinitely better and I strongly recommend it to anyone who sides with my writings above. It’s free, and if you change your mind, you can change it back and continue being cursed and abused by infantile Americans. You probably won’t want to, though. Read on to see how it’s done.
- Sign into Xbox Live. Press the guide button on the controller and then press A to bring up your Gamercard.
- Scroll down to Edit Profile and press A
- Scroll down to Privacy Settings and press A
- Now I’m sure you can guide yourself. Press A on “Voice and Text” then select “Friends Only”.
Voila! Go forth and enjoy peaceful sessions of online gaming
